Frequently Asked Window and Door Questions
What is the difference between an aluminum and vinyl window?
Vinyl- The frame type, made from unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, a very strong and non-corrosive material that provides a natural insulation. Better for energy efficiency.
Aluminum- The frame type, made from extruded aluminum, structurally very strong, allowing slimmer, more modern profiles with larger glass.
What is Low E?
Energy Shield Max- this is a microscopically thin, transparent metallic coating applied to glass to control the way heat and light pass through a window.
What is a Privacy Window
A window type that allows natural light in while limiting or blocking visibility from the outside. For example, a frosted or textured glass.
What is Argon Gas
Argon Gas is found between the panels in the window and slows the transfer of heat through the glass. In the Florida summer, it helps keep the cool air in while keeping the warm air out. It is a great insulator.
Do black or bronze windows cost more than white windows?
Yes, but the cost difference differs based on the brand you buy. Some brands may only cost you $100-$200 per window while others might cost closer to $600-$800 more per window.
What are the Types of Windows?
Single-Hung: Bottom sash moves up and down; top sash stays fixed. This is the most basic and affordable window of them all.
Best for people working with a tighter budget.
Double Hung: Both top and bottom sashes are operable. These are great for ventilation and are easier to clean, especially for those windows on the second story and above.
Fixed/Picture: Large, fixed (meaning, they don’t open) windows designed to showcase a view.
Casement: Hinged on the side; crank open outward. Allow ventilation even during rain and are sometimes paired with fixed windows for better airflow.
Sliding: Sashes glide horizontally on tracks like a sliding glass door. These are good for rooms with horizontal space but limited vertical clearance.
Awning: Hinged at the top; swing outward. Excellent airflow, tight seal for energy efficiency, unobstructed view.
Specialty/Custom: Arched, round, triangular, hexagonal, etc. Typically, fixed panes designed to complement architectural style and add uniqueness.
